Tax exemption? [Jan. 23rd, 2006|10:57 am]
Hello all...

Presumably, many of you work or have worked in nonprofits. I have what is probably a stupid question about being tax-exempt. Does the meaning of this vary by state? I know when I worked in Texas, my boss would give me a form to take with me when I would go out and buy things so that we wouldn't have to pay sales tax. Now I work in California and recently asked my boss if we had such a form and she looked at me like I had two heads and said "Being tax-exempt has nothing to do woth sales tax." So anyone know what the deal is?

I know this is a long shot, but what the hell:

Does anyone know anything about the BACI company? From what I can gather, it's a nation-wide organization that owns(?) theatres that have touring Broadway shows.

I'm up for a box office position with a local "BACI" theatre, and I'm trying to find out more about it before my interview. Unfortunately, their website (bacishows.com) is down.

Thanks for any input :)

New community... [Sep. 15th, 2005|09:09 am]
Sorry for the spam... please don't lynch me. I'll be quick. Just wanted to pimp the new community I created called bay_area_arts

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, please join if you're interested in the arts, whether it's learning about new organizations and events, to meet other people with similar interests, or if you're studying, or working in the arts in some capacity. Thanks! (Cross-posted... well, al over the place. Sorry!)

Hey, all... your friendly mod here. I've been really lax about posting in here lately b/c a lot's been going on in my life. Back in May I posted here, lamenting my job situation in New York. So, not being one to stay in an unhappy situation, I have since relocated to California, and within a few weeks found a great job in Development. Could all just be good timing, but it leads to me believe that the New York job market just sucks.

Anyway, that being said, just curious if anyone else here is from the Bay Area? Also, I have a year left of school to go. (I was working on a B.S. in Arts Admin at Wagner College, but couldn't take it any longer...) Anyone know if there are any undergrad arts admin programs out here? I think a better way to go would be a program where they let you design your own major. Has anyone here done that?

Hope you're all enjoying your summers! And thanks to suerocks for reminding me about this community. Hehe.

grad schools [Jul. 19th, 2005|10:39 am]

Im currently in the arts management undergrad program at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Im working at Williamstown Theatre Festival for the summer in the box office. The program at MCLA is rather new and poorly developed. I feel like Im not gaining any really knowledge of arts mgnt and theres no opportunity to gain experience through the dept in the way that artists can present their work or actors can perform in dept plays.

Ive been tossing around the idea of going to grad school for my MFA in arts mngt and I was wondering if anyone here has done the same? Where did you go? What was the program like? Im specifically looking at Brooklyn College and Monclair State in NJ. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Nice to meet you all btw. :)

Company Management Question [Jun. 11th, 2005|04:14 pm]

I am currently Company Managing a festival (my first real "summer theatre" experience, and I really like it) I am putting together a housing questionaire for next year, and I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions of things to ask that will help me a goup of 4 adults into a house together, and see if they will live together well.

I lucked out this year, It just worked, but that doesn't always happen. I have a bunch, but who knows, I may miss womething. So I will take Any and all auggestions.

Job market... [May. 10th, 2005|05:17 pm]
[mood |distresseddistressed]

Does anyone else here live/work in New York? And if so, is it just me, or does the job market here for people interested in Arts Admin. just absolutely suck? I feel like I've interviewed and/or submitted a resume to every single arts organization in the five boroughs, all to no avail.

Please tell me that I'm not alone... or that there's hope out there?! Are there areas of the country where there seem to be more jobs? If so, I will pack my bags! ;-)

Intro [Apr. 22nd, 2005|05:01 pm]

Hello all,

I am a stage manager and admin slave for a childrens theatre who is currently avoiding doing some data entry by surfing around journals and stumbled on to this one, as luck would have it. I look forward to meeting people with similar interests :)

Just what I was looking for [Apr. 12th, 2005|09:13 pm]

[mood |awakeawake]
[music |nothing, I'm in tech right now, catching up on paper work]

Hello ,

I am new to LJ (Thanks to my sisters convincing me) and I was looking around to gfind some people who were interested in arts Admin. A little about myself. I have a VERY strong backround in COmpany Managerment (Yes, I think I have just about seen it all) and I also have a pretty strong backround in PRoduction and Stage Management. I am looking to broaden my horizons into Educational and outreach theatre (I always find that I am most happy when actually performing to an audience that can get something out of a show). Also, beginning to get a little tired with some of the adults that I work with, so I figure bring kids into the mix.

Anyway, hope tp li9n kup with a few people with similar interests, or at least be able to help with similar issues.
