My boss is constantly asking me to give out our mailing list to other organizations and companies, in order to get discounts on things, other mailing lists, etc. Moreover, I've heard my co-workers assure people that we never give out our list. I have a problem with this. How do you all feel about it? Should I say something to my boss?

For what it's worth I recently quit this job, so I won't be here much longer. Thank god...

In my experience, trading name lists is something that lots of arts organizations do. (The ones I have worked with did all the time.) Personally, I would think the bigger problem is that other employees have told patrons that your organization never give out lists. :-\ Do your co-workers not know that these lists get traded or are they just being dishonest?

Every place I've been at has organized the database/mailing lists so that patron's wishes were respected regarding mailing list trades...

I think my co-workers don't know that we give it out, because for years we had a policy of not doing so. (My boss is relatively new). What do you mean when you say your lists were organized so that patron's wishes were respected? Would someone have to specifically call in and say that they don't want to be solicited?

Yes - they could call in and request that we not give their name out. They did have to ask specifically - it wasn't as if we had a checkbox for it.

When a patron requested that their name not be given out, we used a specific code for their record in the database. When records were pulled, those were excluded so other organizations didn't get the lists.

Haha. My boss generally needs to be crossed. We don't have "policy" on anything anymore.
